Le label Warp fête ses vingt ans ! Biographie

This blazing South African dancefloor heaters from Kwaito head DJ Mujava outta the Attridgeville township in Pretoria has already been picked up by Warp and is sending shockwaves through the online community. Mujava's signature tune 'Township funk' has built up something of a cult status on internet forums and blogs since the end of last year, with his wonderfully low budget video featuring some of the sickest dance moves purely inspired by the irresistable rhythm and riff combo of 'Township funk'.

With the greatest of respect the track itself couldn't be any simpler, or any better, a brash 120bpm Kwaito house pattern is aligned with a bumpin synth bass riff providing the rhythmic drive, but it's the flashing scythe of a riff that will instantly grab the attention of anyone with a functioning set of ears, sitting somewhere between the darker melancholy of Drexciya, classic Forgemasters and Diplo at his best, this could easily have come from the early days of warp and Sheffield bleep, but it's not, it's South Africa in 2007 and we absolutely love it!

The flipside comes with the bonus of a fully buffed and polished version from Ashley Beedle who adds some extra production tweaks and slightly homogenised house styles to remove any of the burrs from Mujava's raw original, but is kinda unneccessary other than for bringing this fantastic track to the attention of a lot of heads who would otherwise never hear it. Can't wait to get this one on down our dance, big up the This Is Music crew and much respect to DJ Mujava, KILLER!!!!
